Messmer High School Senior’s Rap Encourages Student Achievement
Posted 01/11/2010 08:11AM

Messmer High School sophomores weren’t exactly thrilled to learn they needed to take a test.

The PLAN test, sometimes thought of as the “pre-ACT”, helps students measure their current academic development. Due to its similar structure and format, the PLAN test is a strong predictor of success on the ACT, the most widely accepted college entrance exam. Taking the PLAN test encourages sophomores to begin the process of planning for post graduation, and the test results are useful tools in college and career exploration.

Tell that to the sophomores. The day before the test, they still didn’t want to take it.

That’s when Messmer High School’s principal, Mr. Jeff Monday, and senior Tim Johnson stepped in. Mr. Monday asked Tim if he could help get the sophomores excited for the test. With his own graduation on his mind, Tim knew how important the test was. Tim agreed to help. He wrote lyrics and performed a rap for the sophomores at an assembly in order to get them excited for the test.

It worked. Tim got a standing ovation, and the entire student body and staff recognized the sophomores with cheers of encouragement and applause.

The next day, the sophomores still weren’t excited to take the test. But knowing how important it was, and seeing that they had the support of Mr. Monday, senior Tim Johnson, fellow students and teachers went a long way in encouraging them to do their very best.

See Tim perform his rap on YouTube.

Read Tim’s lyrics:

Take the PLAN test, sophomores, it might be BEST

It points out your STRENGTHS and it measures your PROGRESS

Though it ain’t as simple as A, B, C

It’s a perfect preparation for the ACT

You gotta take your time, yeah! You gotta be PATIENT

‘Cause know this improves your prep for EDUCATION

So say it to yourself “take the PLAN—it’s a MISSION!”

You take it can’t lose! Its plus like ADDITION.

Though it may be CHALLENGING and test your KNOWLEDGE

It lets you know if you’re on track for COLLEGE

So I URGE 2012! Just to go ahead and DO IT

‘Cause you will find areas that need IMPROVEMENT

So take the PLAN test...and be a good trooper

If you take the PLAN test it will be better for your FUTURE

So get a NIGHTS REST, and breakfast that will WORK

Besides 3 hours out your day won’t hurt!
